Ear Cytology in Healthy Pet Rabbits

چکیده
Pet rabbits medicine takes an increasing place in small animal practice. Despite significant progress in lagomorph medicine, surgery, and imaging, there are still numerous unexplored areas. The study of external otitis in the rabbit is almost exclusively limited to parasitic otitis [2]. However, pet rabbits like dogs and cats can be seen for non parasitic external otitis (allergic, fungal, or bacterial). Without cytological data on external ear meatus it is almost impossible to study such conditions. Cytologic examination of external ear meatus is the key point of external otitis diagnosis, treatment, and follow up [1,20]. In dogs and cats the results of cytologic examination of ear swab are used to choose the proper topical treatment, based on the presence and concentration of bacteria, fungi, and inflammatory cells. It is a simple, practical and inexpensive diagnostic test, which gives immediate results. Interpretation of such a test is impossible without any data in healthy animals [19]. In rabbits most cytology data are based on fine needle aspiration in dermatology [6,11], and there is no data regarding cytological examination of healthy or inflamed ear meatus in rabbits. Only one publication in 11 New-Zealand rabbits which were used for breeding and meat production gave some information on Malassezia sp isolation in healthy ear meatus [3].

Efficacy of a Formulation Containing Imidacloprid and Moxidectin Against Naturally Acquired Ear Mite Infestations (Psoroptes cuniculi) in Rabbits
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a topical formulation containing imidacloprid and moxidectin for eradication of Psoroptes cuniculi in rabbits. Fourteen adult rabbits from a rabbit husbandry were enrolled in the study. Rabbits were treated with 40 mg imidacloprid and 4 mg moxidectin monthly as spot-on on Days 0, 30, and 60. No other treatment or environmental decontamin...
متن کاملLaboratory reference intervals for systolic blood pressure, rectal temperature, haematology, biochemistry and venous blood gas and electrolytes in healthy pet rabbits
Prospective data from 86 healthy pet rabbits were evaluated to establish reference intervals for hematology, biochemistry, urinalysis, venous blood gas and electrolytes, rectal temperature and systolic blood pressure. Reference intervals for rectal temperature (37.4-39.6 ºC) and systolic blood pressure (75-134 mm/Hg) were previously unreported in pet rabbits. Differences by more than 30% with r...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of Encephalitozoon cuniculi in Pet Rabbits in Korea
Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a microsporidian parasite commonly found in rabbits that can infect humans, causing encephalitozoonosis. The prevalence of encephalitozoonosis is not well documented, even when many clinics suspect pet rabbits as being highly infected. This study investigated the seropositivity of E. cuniculi using ELISA. The examination of 186 rabbits using ELISA showed that 22.6% (...
متن کاملInduction of general anaesthesia with intraosseous injection of thiopental in rabbits
The technique of intraosseous (IO) infusion has been reemerged as an alternative route of intravascular access for the delivery of fluids and some medications. Complications of IO infusion occur rarely and include fractures and osteomyelitis after long-term use of IO access. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficiency of induction of anaesthesia by a standard intravenous route and a...

Next to dogs and cats, rabbits are popular companion animals in the United Kingdom with 1.7 million kept as pets. Almost 60% of these rabbits are registered with a veterinary practice. The number of reported or anecdotal reports describing congenital or acquired cardiac diseases is increasing, which results in a growing demand to perform echocardiography in pet rabbits as clinical cases. Report...
